Observation and theoretical description of the pure Fano-effect in the valence-band photo-emission of ferromagnets
The pure Fano-effect in angle-integrated valence-band photo-emission of
ferromagnets has been observed for the first time. A contribution of the
intrinsic spin polarization to the spin polarization of the photo-electrons has
been avoided by an appropriate choice of the experimental parameters. The
theoretical description of the resulting spectra reveals a complete analogy to
the Fano-effect observed before for paramagnetic transition metals. While the
theoretical photo-current and spin difference spectra are found in good
quantitative agreement with experiment in the case of Fe and Co only a
qualitative agreement could be achieved in the case of Ni by calculations on
the basis of plain local spin density approximation (LSDA). Agreement with
experimental data could be improved in this case in a very substantial way by a
treatment of correlation effects on the basis of dynamical mean field theory

Site-selective Probe of Magnetic Excitations in Rare-earth Nickelates using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering
We have used high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to
study a thin film of NdNiO, a compound whose unusual spin- and bond-ordered
electronic ground state has been of long-standing interest. Below the magnetic
ordering temperature, we observe well-defined collective magnon excitations
along different high-symmetry directions in momentum space. The magnetic
spectra depend strongly on the incident photon energy, which we attribute to
RIXS coupling to different local electronic configurations of the expanded and
compressed NiO octahedra in the bond-ordered state. Both the noncollinear
magnetic ground state and the observed site-dependent magnon excitations are
well described by a model that assumes strong competition between the
antiferromagnetic superexchange and ferromagnetic double-exchange interactions.
Our study provides direct insight into the magnetic dynamics and exchange
interactions of the rare-earth nickelates, and demonstrates that RIXS can serve
as a site-selective probe of magnetism in these and other materials.Comment: Phys. Rev. X, in pres
Methylation of RNA polymerase II non-consensus Lysine residues marks early transcription in mammalian cells
Dynamic post-translational modification of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) coordinates the co-transcriptional recruitment of enzymatic complexes that regulate chromatin states and processing of nascent RNA. Extensive phosphorylation of serine residues at the largest RNAPII subunit occurs at its structurally-disordered C-terminal domain (CTD), which is composed of multiple heptapeptide repeats with consensus sequence Y1-S2-P3-T4-S5-P6-S7. Serine-5 and Serine-7 phosphorylation mark transcription initiation, whereas Serine-2 phosphorylation coincides with productive elongation. In vertebrates, the CTD has eight non-canonical substitutions of Serine-7 into Lysine-7, which can be acetylated (K7ac). Here, we describe mono- and di-methylation of CTD Lysine-7 residues (K7me1 and K7me2). K7me1 and K7me2 are observed during the earliest transcription stages and precede or accompany Serine-5 and Serine-7 phosphorylation. In contrast, K7ac is associated with RNAPII elongation, Serine-2 phosphorylation and mRNA expression. We identify an unexpected balance between RNAPII K7 methylation and acetylation at gene promoters, which fine-tunes gene expression levels
The final two redshifts for radio sources from the equatorial BRL sample
Best, Rottgering and Lehnert (1999, 2000a) defined a new sample of powerful
radio sources from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue, for which redshifts were
compiled or measured for 177 of the 178 objects. For the final object,
MRC1059-010 (3C249), the host galaxy is here identified using near-infrared
imaging, and the redshift is determined from VLT spectroscopy. For one other
object in the sample, MRC0320+053 (4C05.14), the literature redshift has been
questioned: new spectroscopic observations of this object are presented,
deriving a corrected redshift. With these two results, the spectroscopic
completeness of this sample is now 100%.
New redshifts are also presented for PKS0742+10 from the Wall & Peacock 2.7
GHz catalogue, and PKS1336+003 from the Parkes Selected Regions. PKS0742+10
shows a strong neutral hydrogen absorption feature in its Lyman-alpha emission

Using conceptual metaphor and functional grammar to explore how language used in physics affects student learning
This paper introduces a theory about the role of language in learning
physics. The theory is developed in the context of physics students' and
physicists' talking and writing about the subject of quantum mechanics. We
found that physicists' language encodes different varieties of analogical
models through the use of grammar and conceptual metaphor. We hypothesize that
students categorize concepts into ontological categories based on the
grammatical structure of physicists' language. We also hypothesize that
students over-extend and misapply conceptual metaphors in physicists' speech
and writing. Using our theory, we will show how, in some cases, we can explain
student difficulties in quantum mechanics as difficulties with language.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. ST:PE
Polarization resolved Cu -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of orbital and spin excitations in NdBaCuO
High resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has proven
particularly effective in the determination of crystal field and spin
excitations in cuprates. Its strength lies in the large Cu resonance
and in the fact that the scattering cross section follows quite closely the
single-ion model predictions, both in the insulating parent compounds and in
the superconducting doped materials. However, the spectra become increasingly
broader with (hole) doping, hence resolving and assigning spectral features has
proven challenging even with the highest energy resolution experimentally
achievable. Here we have overcome this limitation by measuring the complete
polarization dependence of the RIXS spectra as function of momentum transfer
and doping in thin films of NdBaCuO. Besides
confirming the previous assignment of and spin excitations (magnon,
bimagnon) in the antiferromagnetic insulating parent compound, we unequivocally
single out the actual spin-flip contribution at all dopings. We also
demonstrate that the softening of excitations is mainly attributed to the
shift of the peak to lower energy loss. These results provide a definitive
assessment of the RIXS spectra of cuprates and demonstrate that RIXS
measurements with full polarization control are practically feasible and highly

Cross-Disciplinary Genomics Approaches to Studying Emerging Fungal Infections
Emerging fungal pathogens pose a serious, global and growing threat to food supply systems, wild ecosystems, and human health. However, historic chronic underinvestment in their research has resulted in a limited understanding of their epidemiology relative to bacterial and viral pathogens. Therefore, the untargeted nature of genomics and, more widely, -omics approaches is particularly attractive in addressing the threats posed by and illuminating the biology of these pathogens. Typically, research into plant, human and wildlife mycoses have been largely separated, with limited dialogue between disciplines. However, many serious mycoses facing the world today have common traits irrespective of host species, such as plastic genomes; wide host ranges; large population sizes and an ability to persist outside the host. These commonalities mean that -omics approaches that have been productively applied in one sphere and may also provide important insights in others, where these approaches may have historically been underutilised. In this review, we consider the advances made with genomics approaches in the fields of plant pathology, human medicine and wildlife health and the progress made in linking genomes to other -omics datatypes and sets; we identify the current barriers to linking -omics approaches and how these are being underutilised in each field; and we consider how and which -omics methodologies it is most crucial to build capacity for in the near future
